Dutch institutions to provide thousands of scholarships for international tech students

Amsterdam canal

Although the amount of Dutch students enrolled in technical studies is stable, around 30,000 technical positions go unfilled each year due to a lack of qualified workers. A new ‘technology pact’, signed recently by Dutch businesses, educational institutions, unions, and governmental bodies, hopes to solve this issue by attempting to attract more international tech students.

The pact proposes an increase of internships and scholarships for talented foreign tech students, as well as a strong recruiting link with universities.

Currently, only 7% of international students are enrolled in a technical study, with only 27% of those remaining in The Netherlands to work upon completing their programme. To solve this issue that is sure to cause more and more tension in the coming years if left unattended, industry in the field wants to see the development of more traineeships and apprenticeships for international students, while companies in the sector have promised to provide thousands of scholarships for exceptional Dutch and international science and technology students.

The universities, contributing some recently published advice from the Social and Economic Council on how to keep foreign talent in The Netherlands to the pact, will participate in this joint effort to attract more national and international students to technical studies. Acknowledging the importance of primary and secondary education in igniting an interest in technology in students, the pact also suggests an increase of investment in technology programmes at the lower levels of education.

Nuffic director, Freddy Weima, believes this technology pact will be a good step in the right direction and plans to help the various organisations achieve the goals and agreements the pact has set out. Nuffic is an independent, non-profit organisation in The Netherlands that is dedicated to international cooperation in higher education.

Tuition fees and deadlines for the EU/EEA students

Contour of the Dutch Map

The citizens of the countries from the European Economic Area (EEA) pay the same tuition fees for university programmes in the Netherlands as local, Dutch students.

For the 2013-2014 academic year standard price of the Bachelor programmes is set to €1,835 per year. Tuition fees of Master programmes start from €7,000 and are the same for Dutch, EU, and non-EU students.

Visa application procedure takes less time for the citizens from EEA countries. As the result, they may apply to the university programmes closer to start dates, than non-EEA students: in August for September programmes and in January for the February ones. Some programmes in universities in the Netherlands have limited number of places available, and in case of their popularity they can be filled up before the deadlines.

The European Economic Area (EEA) functions from January 1st 1994 and consists of European Union (EU) countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. EU includes following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Where study students of Stenden’s Hotel Management programme

Stenden University Hotel

Stenden University of Applied Sciences is one of the few vocational universities in the Netherlands, which runs their own learning company, the four stars Stenden University Hotel. This is the real business hotel, where students of Stenden’s International Hotel Management School study and work during the first 3 years of their study programme.

Under the supervision of the university staff they develop hotel’s website and learn to provide high quality services of any level, from meeting new guest to organising various events, activities, and excursions. Because of students’ eagerness, creativity, and willingness to learn Stenden University Hotel is doing very well. In 2004 it overgrew its ‘leaning company’ status and started to invite regular guests, and in 2012 this hotel celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Stenden University Hotel is located in Leeuwarden, a capital of the Northern Province Friesland. It consists of 28 hotel rooms, a lobby, restaurant, and bar. As this hotel is a part of Stenden University, its guests have full access to the university facilities and equipment, needed for various meetings, conferences, seminars, training sessions, and congresses.

If you like to organise parties and events and make your guest feel welcome, if you are able to make several things at the same time and find flexible solutions of complex problems, than Hospitality Management area may be the right choice for your future career.

International Hotel Management of Stenden University starts in September and February and leads to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. While students of this programme can gain practice experience in the real environment of Stenden University Hotel, they also do not miss possibilities of (inter)national traineeships during their fourth year of education.

These traineeships not only allow them to compare different hospitality business methods, but also facilitate finding first work place. Due to this education approach 96% students of this programme start their career within 5 months after graduation.
